pianist for over 25 years at fort johnson
Few staff members at Fort Johnson have served this church as long or as faithfully as our church pianist, Cathy White. Married to Mitch White and the mother of Emily and Elizabeth, Cathy White is as much a part of our church as the pews and the hymnals. She grew up in this church, and from an early age showed a keen interest in church music, preferring to study from the hymnal instead of working on the classics. Cathy began playing for services at Fort Johnson while she was still very young, and after moving away for a time and then returning to Charleston, she immediately resumed her position at the piano, where she has remained these many years. Cathy is the staff pianist for Fort Johnson, and presides over her instrument at the Traditional 11:00 Sunday Church service. In addition to accompanying the organ on the hymns, Cathy is the principle accompanist for the Adult Choir during the anthems. She also plays during the Wednesday Evening Prayer Service. One of the most important achievements in Cathy's career at Fort Johnson was her selection of our new seven-foot concert grand piano. Cathy, like so many in our church, was unhappy with the digital piano the church bought only two years prior, and after a time, the church simply could not take the sounds of this poor imitation. Cathy was then asked to select a new piano for the church, and through her experience was able to find just the piano our church needed. This is the largest piano we have ever owned, but as Cathy remarked, "We have a Cadillac organ....we need a Cadillac piano!" The church has no argument with that statement, and we are all the richer for having been blessed weekly by this beautiful instrument. |
